Short track and long track speed skating place the most unforgiving demands on indoor lighting, because the playing surface is close to a mirror. Delivered in Russia in 2021, this indoor ice and snow sports centre was equipped with 92 units of the Sense FC High Bay Light, achieving a maintained 500 lux on the ice — the JGJ 153-2016 Class II level for amateur competition and professional training, with glare held to GR ≤ 30.
Ice is a partial specular reflector, so the real risk is not too little light but reflected glare: a correctly aimed luminaire can still throw a mirror image into a skater's eyes. A short track athlete banks into a corner with the head low and tilted, reading the ice and the position of rivals at over 50 km/h — losing visual reference at that speed is a safety matter. The FC optics were therefore aimed along the direction of travel rather than across it, keeping every fitting outside the mirrored zone for athletes, judges and cameras, while low-luminance lenses and louvres cut the brightness of the emitting surface itself.
An ice hall is hostile to equipment as well. Air above the sheet is cold, humidity peaks during ice making and resurfacing, and condensation dripping onto the ice leaves bumps felt immediately at racing speed. The FC luminaires are sealed to IP66 with anti-condensation protection and low-temperature-rated drivers that start instantly at full output, with no warm-up and no re-strike delay. When the hall switches to snow operation, surface reflectance climbs to 80–90%, so a reduced-output scene is programmed to keep the visual environment comfortable.
DALI control moves the hall between training, competition, resurfacing and public-skating scenes from one point, and dims it during low-occupancy hours — material in a building whose refrigeration plant never stops. High above the sheet, long-life LED engines also remove the expensive business of closing the ice for re-lamping. Verified by on-site measurement, the installation has run since 2021 without unplanned maintenance, and hall management reported even, glare-free ice with clearly legible lane markings at racing speed.
